A tool to estimate storage with SQL data compression – SQL Server

Compression technique saves lot of storage in our disk. Yes, We already knew this. But, the traditional way to estimate the data storage size with data compression and identify the best table objects for data compression is a little time consuming process. Perhaps, we were doing it using SQL output and excel formulas till yesterday.

This morning, I saw a new tool in Microsoft codeplex website called SQL Server Compression Estimator (SSCE).

It is a wonderful tool that reduce DBA’s valuable time and effort. This tool estimates the best objects for data compression in SQL Server. Of course, it will estimate both row and page compression with some additional reports.

We can also export an estimation report to CSV format for future analysis. I believe this tool may be helpful for you too. Place share your thoughts about it in the comment section.

Thanks to Microsoft codeplex and the developer. You can learn more and download it from here http://ssce.codeplex.com/.
