SSIS and SSRS Template File Location – SQL Server 2008 R2

Templates are used to make the development process easier or eliminating repeated work. For instance, the company reports are always having some standard format. if you are asked to design a report in SSRS with your company header image, footer text and etc., in each report then you will have to do some standard design repeatedly. But, if you have some template which has all your basic design then you can just focus on your data manipulation part and it saves the lot of development time.

We can create customized template in BIDS project such as, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. In this blog post I will be showing you how to deploy your customized template for BIDS project SSIS and SSRS.

Deploy SSIS template package

Step 1: Create a SSIS project with a package named Package_Template.dtsx

Step 2: Design template package with Logging, Package configurations, variables and etc., that you need in every package design.

Step 3: Copy the Package_Template.dtsx file and Paste the file in to this location

<Drive>\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\DataTransformationProject\DataTransformationItems

Step 5: Now, open the BIDS and create a new package then goto Add->New item windows. The packate template will be shown in the new item window.

now, enjoy developing package quickly

1. this template is designed in SQL Server 2008 R2.

2. package ID should be regenerated for every new package template added to the SSIS solution.

Deploy SSRS template

I assume you already have a template reports for SSRS solution. Now, you just copy your report template (ie. Template.rdl) file and drop in to the following location.

<Drive>\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\ReportProject

Click Add new item from the SSRS Reports node then you will see the Template report in the New items window.

Note:This report is designed in SQL Server 2008 R2
