Big Data and Cloud – The beginning of a new digital era


I would like to wish all my readers a happy new year 2013. I choose this topic in an optimistic way to say good-bye to 2012 and a warm welcome to 2013.

In 2012, We all know that there are a lot of things happened in Information Technology world. In this blog, I am going to talk about Cloud and Big Data. Because, these two technologies are going to rule the year 2013. As per the expert’s prediction, Big data and cloud computing will be the major technology that everybody will watch for and  top enterprises will move their IT department to cloud environment and implement big data for data analysis and decision making purpose.

The United States National Intelligence Council has released a document Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds (PDF) on December 10, 2012. In this document we can read about the impact of these technologies in the future. Reference chapter: The Impact Of  New Technologies.

Cloud Computing:

It refers to the delivering massive computer resources as a service models. There are various services available in Cloud computing. I have written a series of blog posts that explains about various cloud computing platforms and its services. Read it.

There are many cloud service providers available now and the list is expected to grow more. Here are the few top cloud providers:

  • Amazon
  • Microsoft
  • Apple
  • IBM
  • Google

Big Data

It is simply defined as huge data that are generated by both human and machine. This data are coming from various sources and in structured or unstructured format.

Big data cannot be processed using a traditional data processing system to make decision. So, we need new technology to handle big data now. There are approximately more than 250K open source technologies around us. We have to choose the right technology that fit for our environment. Because, one thing does not fit for all.

Big Data will create new job opportunity in the upcoming years and it may also create new roles such as business analysts, data scientists, data stewards, information architects, data warehouse architects and Chief Data Officer – Source.

Experts are predicting that there will be lots of need for ‘data scientist’ role in 2013. are you ready for that?

Conclusion

It is just the beginning and there are lots of research work is going on right now. So, we have to wait and watch the growth of these technologies and its impact to the IT and our economy.
