Microsoft has announced the ending of extended support for SQL Server 2000. But, the Premier Support customers have option to contact Microsoft for assistance. Also, web resources such as technical documents, discussion with frequently asked question and troubleshooting tools are available for self assistance.

Because, we have to have SQL Server 2000 SP4 and then upgrade to SQL Server 2008 and the final step is to upgrade SQL server 2012. Just for information, we can restore the SQL Server 2000 database backup in SQL Server 2012.
